Personalities Reipenhausen, Ernst Ludwig

The German painter and engraver worked in Göttingen. In 1781, he joined the University of Göttingen. In the artistic style, the works of Daniil Khodovetsky, with whom he made illustrations for almanacs, calendars and poetry collections, guided him. He illustrated also scientific publications of university professors. He became known for the first time thanks to engraving after the original prints of the English painter and engraver William Hogarth (1694–1767). From 1794 to 1834, the Göttingen publisher, Johann Christian Dieterich, published a series of issues entitled "Ausführliche Erklärung der Hogarthischen Kupferstiche" (A detailed description of Hogarth’s engravings). It included 12 (according to other data 14) issues of engravings (88–89 prints) with well-known comments to them, written by George Christoph Lichtenberg, a local physics professor. Engravings were "good copies" of Hogarth’s original, performed by the German engraver Ernst Reipenhausen.
