Engraver of Flemish origin. One of the outstanding chisel engravers of his time. At first he studied in his hometown under the guidance of engravers Gaspar Huybrechts and Cornelius Galle. From 1666 — in Paris, where he worked with Nicolas Pitau. He studied under François de Poilly, Robert Nanteuil, and Philippe de Champaigne. Louis XIV gave him the title of royal engraver, he was also appointed a teacher of the academy established at the Gobelins manufactory. From 1677, he was an academician of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, an advisor and first draftsman of the King’s Cabinet.
