Personalities Schmidt, Georg Friedrich

German engraver and etcher. One of the most famous graphic artists of the XVIII century. From 1727 to 1730, he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts with George P. Busch. In 1736, studied with Larmessin in Paris. In 1744, for the portrait of Pierre Mignard (after Rigaud), he was accepted as a member of the Paris Academy. Upon returning to Berlin, he was ap-pointed as a courier engraver by King of Frederick II. In 1757–1762, he was in service in Russia. In 1762, he returned to Berlin, where he taught engraving in the academy. Among his students was H. D. Berger. In 1765, he was elected as a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He created about 300 prints.
