Personalities Muller, Jan Harmensz

Painter, draftsman, engraver, representative of the Dutch Baroque.

The elder son and student of the engraver and publisher Harmensz Jan Muller (c. 1540–1617). He worked at his father's publishing house Vergulde Passer in Amsterdam. He spent some time at the workshop of Hendrick Goltzius. He spent most of his life in Prague at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, where he met many painters of that time, including Hans von Aachen and Bartholomeus Spranger, sculptor (Adriaen de Vries), Having family ties with the latter. In 1597 he became an engraver of the imperial court. Probably in 1595–1602 he was in Rome and Naples, during this period he made a lot of engravings. After his father’s death in 1617, he inherited the publishing house as well as the engraving plates.
