Personalities Bruyn, Nicolaes de

Flemish engraver who worked in Holland. He was born in the family of a sugar manufacturer Jan de Bruyn. He studied art of engraving with his uncle, the engraver Abraham de Bruyn (ca. 1539–1587). From 1601 he was a member of the Antwerp guild of St. Luke. In 1617 he moved to Rotterdam, where he worked until his death. His engravings are made both from his own drawings and from the originals of other artists. In his original drawings he imitated the manner of Lucas van Leiden.
