There is an inscription along the perimeter of the oval frame: PETRUS MAYEUR ABBAS CLARAEVALLIS ALIX^US; under the image, on the left: M. Loir pinxit; on the right: De Larmessin graveur du Roy.
According to the National Library of France, "the engraving was exhibited in 1745 at Paris Salon under the title "Engraved portrait of the abbot of Clairvaux, from the original written by Mademoiselle Loir."

Loir, Marianne (ca. 1705 – 1783) – French portrait artist from a family of hereditary artists and engravers. Granddaughter of Nicolas-Pierre Loir (1624–1679), sister of Alexis III Loir (1712–1785). She painted representatives of the provincial nobility with oil and pastel.

Mayeur, Pierre (?– 1761) – doctor of theology, abbot of the Clairvaux Monastery (1740-1761).
