All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference with international participation

"BOOKS AS CULTURAL ARTEFACTS:
STUDY, PRESERVATION, and POPULARIZATION"

to the 100th anniversary of the Book Museum of the Department of Rare Books
and Manuscripts of Odesa National Scientific Library

The Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of Odesa National Scientific Library is one of the oldest specialized departments of the library, it contains historical collections from ancient manuscripts to rare editions of the 20th century. Scientific study and popularization of handwritten and printed cultural artefacts, an integral part of the national cultural heritage of the people of Ukraine and a unique component of the world cultural heritage, is a significant contribution of the library team to the formation of national identity, individual, collective and historical consciousness.

The founding of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts and of Book Museum took place under complicated historical conditions. Now, when the institutions of memory are also in a state of confronting the threats of destruction of the national culture because of a full-scale Russian invasion of the territory of Ukraine, the most important task of the professional community is the storage, research and popularization of handwritten and printed cultural artefacts.

The main purpose of the conference is to consolidate the professional community in order to strengthen the role of cultural institutions in Ukraine and all over the world. We hope to cover issues of studying, preserving, protecting and popularizing cultural and historical heritage. We expect the participants share successful practices, discuss priority areas of work and exchange the experience of domestic and international experts on topical issues of book science, library science and bibliography, archival science, museology, information activities, digital representation of documentary monuments as part of the activities of memory institutions.

The conference will cover the following issues:

  • Libraries, archives, museums as institutions for the preservation of national memory: a study of history and development;
  • The history of the formation and the current state of the collections of documentary monuments in the collections of memorial institutions;
  • Ukrainian book science, library science, archival science and museology traditions: history, current state and development prospects;

  • Preservation of documents in the face of threats of military conflicts: storage, conservation and restoration technologies;
