Personalities Wolfgang, Johann Georg

Engraver. He was a member of a dynasty of German engravers founded by his grandfather, the artist Andreas Wolfgang, a native of Chemnitz. He first studied under his father, the engraver Georg Andreas Wolfgang (1631–1716), in Augsburg. From 1684 he continued his education in Amsterdam. In 1688 he returned to Augsburg. In 1704, King Frederick I of Prussia appointed him engraver of the royal court. From 1706 he was an honorary member of the Prussian Royal Academy of Arts (Berlin). He created many portraits of the three Prussian kings – Frederick I, Frederick William I, Frederick II, whom he served, as well as other members of the court. His youngest son, Johann Georg (1699 – after 1761), was also an engraver, and his eldest son, Georg Andreas (1703-1745), was a portrait painter.
