Engraver-etcher, draftsman, watercolorist. He worked in the field of book illustration. Student of J. P. Lebas. He started as a watercolor artist. In 1790, he executed a series of engraved portraits of deputies of the National Assembly. He exhibited at the Paris Salon: for the first time – in 1798 ("Landscape with Swimsuits"), regularly – from 1812 (two engravings and a sketch from nature) to 1833. He engraved several etchings for the publication "Le sacre de S. M. l'Empereur Napoléon dans l'église métropolitaine de Paris, le XI frimaire an XIII dimanche 2 décembre 1804" (Coronation of Emperor Napoleon. Paris, 1804), after the originals by Charles Percier and Jean-Baptiste Isabey.
The engraving "The Lion Hunt" is an early work by Malbeste, made during his studies with Lebas, together with the teacher (as the signature on the full copy of the print indicates).
