Engraver, publisher, print dealer and collector. Student of Claude Gillot. At first he specialized in book illustrations, then he worked as an engraver-reproducer based on the originals of A. Watteau, Ch.-A. Coypel, N. Lancret and others. From 1733 – a member of the Academy of Saint Luke in Paris, from 1747 – its director. In the end, he devoted himself to the publishing business, in which he gained the fame of a great specialist. Amassed a large art collection: about 40,000 engravings and 1,000 drawings, which was sold after his death in 1779 for a large sum – 51,487 livres. His son, François-Charles Joullain (ca. 1734–1790), was also a print dealer.
