The author and name of the engraving were established on the basis of a comparison with a similar engraving by J. J. Flipart, kept in the British Museum (London).

The painting original by J. B. Greuze is in the Hermitage (St. Petersburg). The canvas was purchased in 1766 by the Russian empress Catherine II from the author himself.
