Shtern’s work “Decade of the K.-D. Party in Odessa: Fragments of Memories,” published in 1915 in Odesa, is a relatively short yet significant memoir devoted to the historical activities of the Constitutional-Democratic Party (Cadets) in the city at the beginning of the twentieth century. Drawing on personal recollections and his experience as a direct participant in party life, the author recreates the atmosphere of political struggle in Odesa during the revolutionary events of 1905 and the period of reaction that followed.
The book describes the process of the formation of the Odesa Cadet organization, identifies the circle of its most active members, and analyzes internal discussions as well as disagreements with other political forces operating in the city at the time. Considerable attention is given to the party’s participation in local self-government institutions and to the impact of all-Russian political developments on the political life of Odesa.
The publication consists of fragmentary “scraps of memories,” which gives the narrative a subjective character. At the same time, this feature enhances its documentary value, making the work an important source for the study of the political history of Odesa and the liberal movement in the Russian Empire on the eve of World War I.
