Among the valuable publications donated to the library by its former patron, M.M. Tolstoy is a book on Japanese woodblock prints (xylography). This is the first study of the topic created by the English collector and researcher W. Anderson.
William Anderson (1842-1900) was a professor of anatomy at the Royal Academy, chairman of the council of the Japan Society, owner of one of the best collections of Japanese art in Europe, author of books and catalogues, including a catalogue of the collection of Japanese and Chinese paintings in the British Museum. The book is illustrated with black-and-white and colour reproductions of the best examples of prints and contains an index of names, key concepts and terms - a rare occurrence in an art publication of the time.
