«Zorya» - literary, scientific, social, and cultural journal of liberal folk orientation, which was issued twice a month in Lviv in 1880-1897 “for Russian families” (i.e., for Ukrainians), and which significantly facilitated the development of Ukrainian culture, art, literature, and literary criticism.

The journal was created as a result of the private initiative of Omelian Partytskyi (1840-1895), a well-known Ukrainian linguist, historian, and educator who founded it and was its publisher in 1880-1885.

The journal published works of Ukrainian classical writers such as Taras Shevchenko, M. Shashkevych, Y. Shchogoliv, L. Hlibov, Y. Fedkovych, S. Rudansky, Panas Myrnyi, I. Nechuy-Levytsky, Olena Pchilka, as well as writers of the younger generation - I. Franko, M. Kotsiubynskyi, P. Hrabovskyi, O. Kobylianska, B. Hrynchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, who began her career with the publication of her poem “Hope” in «Zorya» at the age of 17.

In addition to fiction works the journal published materials on the history of literature, literary criticism, reviews of works of fiction, a bibliography, as well as materials on folklore, ethnography, linguistics, history, art history, natural history, biographies of prominent people, etc. The journal also contained significant iconographic material - portraits of Ukrainian writers, scientists, cultural figures, etc.

Due to the editorial work of Ivan Franko (from 1883 to autumn 1886) and the involvement of new creative forces, the journal became an all-Ukrainian literary and scientific organ. After «Zorya» became the property of the Shevchenko Society in late 1885, its ties with Naddniprianshchyna Ukraine expanded.

Vasyl Lukych (pseudonym of Volodymyr Levytskyi) played an important role in raising the literary and scientific level of the journal. He resumed the journal's competitions for the best scientific and artistic works, introduced new permanent sections, and, on his initiative, from 1891, «Zorya» was issued as an illustrated journal.

On 15 (27) December 1897, the «Zorya» ceased to exist, and in 1898 the Literary and Scientific Bulletin became its successor.
