The census of Odesa, conducted on December 1, 1892, was the first comprehensive demographic study of the city organized on the basis of a strict plan. Previous census attempts had not reached this level of detail (the 1873 census was conducted under a short program). The coordinator of this census was Anton Boryniewicz, head of the newly created city Statistical Bureau, which was responsible for all organizational activities. The purpose of the census was to collect data that could be used to address practical issues of public administration.
The one-day census covered the entire population of the city, including those who were temporarily absent. Data was collected on age, social status, occupation, literacy, and housing conditions: number of rooms, floors, occupancy rate, etc. Nationality was not recorded in the census, but citizenship and native language were indicated, with Ukrainian and Belarusian not being separated from Russian in the final statistics. The results of the census were published in three parts in 1894.
