The Statistical Department at the Kherson Provincial Zemstvo Administration began its activities in the spring of 1882. In 1882-1887, zemstvo statisticians under the leadership of O. Rusov conducted an assessment and household inventory of the districts of the Kherson province. The results of these studies were summarized in fundamental local history works: “Materials for the Assessment of the Lands of the Kherson Province” in six volumes and ‘Results of the Household Census’ for the districts of Yelisavethrad, Oleksandriia, and Ananievo.
The materials for the census were based on information collected by the Yelisavethrad district zemstvo with the constant participation and supervision of the Statistical Department of the Kherson Provincial Zemstvo in late 1883 and early 1884. The publication contains: a list of settlements of the Yelisavethrad district; information on the population by class; data characterizing the external environment of all farms and agricultural activities of landowning households; the number of actual owners and existing farms with their distribution by size of ownership; summary of economic indicators determining the welfare of farms of different class groups in the district, etc.
