In his study "From the History of Ukrainian Ethnography", Oleksandr Hrushevsky (1877 - ca. 1942), a Ukrainian historian, literary critic, and ethnographer, analyses the use of ethnographic themes in Ukrainian literature, starting with I. Kotliarevsky's Aeneid. Kotliarevskyi's Aeneid and referring to the works of such writers as H. Kvitka-Osnovianenko ("Dead Man's Easter"), K. Dumytrashko ("The Serpent"), N. Kostomarov ("Easter Night"), M. Markevych ("The Witch", "The Enchantress", "Wreaths", "Memorial Day", "Ivan Kupala", "The Good Housekeeper") and others.

The author thoroughly analyses and highlights the writers' interest in folk life, traditions, folk art, beliefs and legends, rituals and amusements, as well as how these ethnographic themes are embodied in the artistic context, pointing to the role of writers in preserving, developing and popularising Ukrainian ethnography. This study is a valuable source for understanding the relationship between literature and ethnography.
