The third men's gymnasium was reorganized on the basis of the supreme order of July 3, 1874 from the Odessa first pro-gymnasium (founded in 1871). At that time, it had 9 classes, including one preparatory class, and 334 students. In 1876, the gymnasium, the director of which was State Councilor Mykola Mykolayovych Parunov, operated at the address: 31 Uspenska (corner of Kanatnaya), in a building belonging to the Odessa merchant Krasnosilskyi. At the beginning of 1885, the gymnasium was already operating in building No. 2 on Troitsky Street (corner of Marazliivska Street), which belonged to Gerasim Hryhorovych Romanenko.

The reports presented in the publication contain statistical data and information about the teaching staff, educational activities (programs, tasks given to students for the summer, questions for exams, etc.), student composition by religion, social status and academic performance; premises of the gymnasium and finances of the institution.
