Bolesław Prus (1847-1912) was a famous Polish writer and journalist. He became famous for his works that reflect the problems of social and political life in Poland in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and are marked by a deep understanding of the psychology of the characters and the reproduction of complex social realities, problems of class differences and inequality in Polish society at that time.
"The Living Telegraph" is a story in which the author ridicules ostentatious charity, questions the motives and actions of people who demonstrate their "nobility" only to their environment. Some of the characters in the story engage in charitable activities to show their "nobility", but the true motivation behind their actions is questionable.
Pruss reveals the acute social problem of illusory charity, showing how some people use it only for their own popularity or benefit, without having a real need to help someone. In this story, the author calls for a deeper understanding and sincerity of those who do good deeds, emphasising the importance of sincerity and openness in philanthropy.
