In 1888 the society “Prosvita” announced a contest for a writing of a popular history of Ukraine. Oleksander Hryhorovych Barvinsky (1847-1926), the Ukrainian socio-political activist, historian, teacher, took this work. On 28th of August in 1890, at the meeting of the society “Prosvita” in Kolomyya, he presented "The illustrated history of Rus from ancient times to present days after Russian and foreign historians".
This best and popular work of O. Barvinsky appeared in autumn of 1890. It contains a rich illustrative material and also portraits of famous Ukrainian political and cultural activists. In his work O. Barvinsky, in contrast to moscowphile historical conception, pointed to the differences in the development of the Ukrainian and Russian people.
A copy of Odesa National Scientific Library was previously kept in the private collection of M. F. Komarov (1844-1913), a well-known Ukrainian bibliographer, ethnographer, public figure, as evidenced by the owner's stamp on the cover and on the title page.
