Ukrainian opera in 4 acts
Yavtukh Goremyka or Inheritance and curse : Little Russian opera, in 4 acts / N. D. – Taganrog ; Odessa : publishing house of A. Brown, 1846. – 128 p.
Ukrainian opera in 4 acts. A realistic social drama about a peasant who renounces his mother and beloved for the sake of wealth and is punished with loneliness. The plot focuses on the figure of Yavtukh Goremyka, who suffers from poverty, abuse by pan Lysytsky and the tax collector. The first act is characterised by realistic everyday scenes with an intense social conflict; then the work becomes anecdotal and parodic, losing its tragic pathos and acquiring a grotesque comic sound with caricatured scenes and stylisations of Gogol's humour. It has a tragic ending. It is an interesting example of Ukrainian drama of the 1840s with a heterogeneous artistic structure and rich use of Ukrainian folk songs.
