The author of the book is Antin Rudnytsky (1902-1975) - a pianist, conductor, musicologist, and one of the most prominent composers of modernism. The monograph covers all periods and genres of Ukrainian music, from ceremonial folk songs to professional music of Western and Eastern Ukraine contemporary to the author. Three centres of musical creativity are highlighted separately: Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa.

The author of the cover is a famous artist, art critic, and poet Sviatoslav Hordynskyi (1906-1993).
