Oleksander Serhiyovich Hrushevsky (1877-1942?), an outstanding scholar, public figure, bright and many-sided figure in Ukrainian science of the beginning of the 20th century. O.S. Hrushevsky enriched the heritage of national science with valuable works in history, historiography, source study, historical geography, ethnography, folklore, literature. The range of his scientific researches and their chronological boundaries, the scale of scientific-organizational and pedagogical activity are really impressive.
A significant place in the scientific heritage of O.S. Hrushevsky is the study of the development of Ukrainian scientific thought and formation of national science in the 19th – beginning of the 20th century. This work deals with the peculiarities of Ukrainian cultural and scientific life during the times of Russian Empire, namely in the middle of the 19th century.
A copy of Odesa National Scientific Library was previously stored in the private collection of Mykhaylo Komarov (1844-1913), a famous Ukrainian bibliographer, ethnographer, public figure, as evidenced by the owner’s stamp on cover and the title page.
