Gavriil (Vasilii Fedorovych Rozanov; 1781-1858) - church orthodox figure, bishop of Katerinoslav (1828-1837, archbishop since 1832), archbishop of Kherson and Tavriia (1837-1848), later of Tver and Kashin (1848-1857). The historian and archeologist, the researcher of the history of Southern Ukraine and Zaporizhia, he is considered to be the first historiographer of the city of Dnipro (Katerinoslav).
In 1846 a historical note was published as a separate edition about the foundation of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Katerynoslav. The work represents in details a description of the relaying and sanctification of the constructed Transfiguration Cathedral, the witness and direct participant of this event was the author himself, who with vigilant studiousness, gave his direct personal supervision and conduction made a construction of the cathedral, that was completed in 1835. Archbishop Gavriil first tried to research the history of Katerynoslav, provided basic factual material on the process of city formation in the last quarter of the 18th century, formulated his own conception of its development, following Russian monarchical historiographic tradition of that time.
