The idea of creating a virtual museum of history of the library appeared when the librarians began a preparation for the celebration of the 185th library anniversary. However not all of those who want to see the library and use its services have an opportunity to come to Odesa. Therefore, using the advantages of the latest technology, we present the historical pages of our library, which, in our opinion, are able to provide an idea of its activities.
The history of the library is divided into several periods.
The first period shows the establishment and development of the library in the XIX century, from the founding in 1829 to 1920, when the Soviet power was finally established in Odesa and the library entered a fundamentally different period of its life.
The second period reveals the history until 1945, when the library was working in the period of tough formation of a new society lasting for a twenty years and feeling the burden of a totalitarian state.
The third period (1945–1991) is the period of sustainable development and establishment the library as a state institution.
The modern period is the period of activity of the library in independent and democratic Ukraine in the new political and socio-cultural conditions, mastering the latest technologies and recognition the library as a national institution.
Each section of the museum is composed of two levels. The first one provides general information and illustrations. A text has links, which are marked with color and provide extended information of second level.
Dear visitors, we present the first “hall” of our museum. We hope that soon you will have an opportunity to go through the entire museum of our library.
