The book represents the first attempt at a thorough historical study of the commercial and industrial development of Odesa, its commercial and industrial firms, and the role of key individuals who were at the origins of the city's economic prosperity. The author has paid considerable attention to the history of foreign trade, shipping, the functioning of fairs, and the development of local crafts and industry. Among the main source materials used in the study are those published in the newspaper “Odesskyi Vestnik” (“Odessa Herald”), which allowed the author to provide a detailed analysis of the economic processes that defined the city's face in different historical periods.
