“The Black Council. Chronicle of 1663” is an outstanding work of Ukrainian literature, the first historical novel in the Ukrainian language, written by the famous Ukrainian writer, historian and public figure Panteleimon Kulish (1819-1897). The novel takes the reader into the whirlwind of events of the 17th century, during the political and social crisis after the death of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, known as the Ruin, one of the most difficult periods of Ukrainian history.
Based on real historical events, in particular the Black Council of 1663 in Nizhyn, the author skilfully depicted the social contradictions after the liberation war between different social classes of Ukrainian society and the struggle for power.
This is the second edition of the novel and the first illustrated edition, published in Odesa, in the printing house of Yurii Fesenko (1901). The initiator of its publication was Mykhailo Komarov.
The edition is supplemented by illustrations of Amvrosy Zhdakha (1855-1927), which skilfully convey the atmosphere of the events of the 17th century, and an explanatory dictionary. Odesa edition of “the Black Council” is a bibliographic rarity.
