In this small work, based on the folklore legend about God's punishment for crime, H. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko develops the theme of exposing and punishing a thief and a murderer. Having taken from folklore only an abstract thesis about crime and punishment in a religious and didactic way, H. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko creates a concrete socially charged plot from the life of peasants, concentrating his attention on the complex psychology of crime.
In the story, what is important is not so much the interesting plot and the unusual method of exposing the criminal, but the characteristics of the images of the poor wage-earner and the rich criminal, whom fellow villagers considered a smart and honest person for a long time.
The story "Perekotipole" represents a peculiar stage of the writer's development of the realistic principle of ethical and psychological immersion in the complex inner world of the characters, reproduction of the "dialectic of the soul" of the characters, initiating psychological analysis in Ukrainian romantic prose.
The Society "Prosvita" published almanacs and collections, in which the compilers collected mainly what, in the opinion of enlightened people, the reader, most often a peasant, might need in everyday life. The books provided artistic texts easily accessible to ordinary people, popular posts on historical, religious, economic, literary, medical topics, and practical advisors. "Enlightenment sheets" are small, small-format collections, which usually consisted of two or more works.
