Ogienko I. Ukrainian culture : a brief history of the cultural life of the Ukrainian people : a course read at the Ukrainian People's University : with pictures and portraits of Ukrainian cultural figures [Electronic copy] / I. Ogienko ; art. Kyiv : E. Cherepovsky's Bookstore. Printing. "I. Chokolov", 1918. 272 p. : ill.

The book by Ivan Ohienko (1882-1972), a well-known scholar, political, public and church figure, presents a course of lectures on the history of the emergence and development of Ukrainian culture. The author analyses the characteristic features of our culture, traces its development in different periods of history, focusing on the national identity of Ukrainian culture, and shows, on the basis of numerous facts and documentary evidence, the "influence of Ukrainian culture on Moscow culture". Thus, I. Ogienko attempts to break the stereotype of perceiving Ukrainian culture as a derivative, dependent on Russian culture. The author argues that for many centuries of its history, Ukrainian culture has not had favourable conditions for its development, and he even includes a separate section on "the wrongs done to the Ukrainian people", logically leading to the idea that national statehood is a necessary historical condition and a guarantor of a normal cultural process in Ukraine.
